"Prima Fucking Ballerinas" fight Eastern European gangsters while we drink what Margaret Rand calls "white wines in which tannins are not the point, but have a role to play."
If it was a straight up ballerinas vs goons action movie, fine. But there's a whole lotta wheel spinning in the first forty five minutes. It's not the most complicated setup, guys.
They set up core character traits for each ballerina, and even kind-of set up distinctions with the goons. I dare say this is the female POV approach to an action movie: they’re only going to give a shit if there’s actual interpersonal human dynamics at play. I’m not saying these core traits were complex or deep, but each character was distinct by the time the violence erupts. The film also (quite rightly) saw a lot to love in spending time with Thurman’s bar boss character in juxtaposition to the male goons. It’s closer to a horror comedy than an action movie.

I love a dance movie - thanks for the tip! (I also often like an orange - or off-orange - Gruner more than a regular Gruner...)
