Francis Ford Coppola: Winery Godfather to MegaFlopolis, Part 2 - Magalopolis (2024)
Here’s PART TWO of our coverage of Francis Ford Coppola’s Alpha and Omega of his career. Make sure you check out PART ONE where we cover The Godfather (1972) and the rise, almost fall, then final sell-off of Coppola’s winery empire in Napa, Sonoma, and Oregon.
As mentioned in those episodes, when we shared our vintage Niebaum-Coppola wines with the folks at Curated Wine Shop here in Los Angeles, one of the ladies who works there knew one of the actresses in Megalopolis and offered to put us in touch. Um…yes, please!
That actress turned out to be HALEY SIMS. You might have spotted Haley on the TV shows such as DEAD TO ME, RESERVATION DOGS, GOOD GIRLS REVOLT, and FLAKED, and most recently she co-starred in the horror movie THE GROVE which received a limited theatrical released on April 4th.
Haley left LA and moved to Atlanta, Georgia a few years back, and by doing so found herself in the enviable position of being able to audition for Francis Ford Coppola’s MEGALOPOLIS. Her story of the audition process, her days of filming, her multiple wraps, and eventual stunt training for one particular sequence, is absolutely fascinating and what we film nerds LOVE to dig into.
So folks - dig in!!! This is an excellent conversation, Haley is a brilliant storyteller, and I am so happy to be sharing this episode with you.
Wait! There’s a Drink Pairing, Too!
We of course asked Haley what she’d drink while watching Megalopolis, and her answer was absolutely classic:
Megalopolis is a city sandwiched between the past and the future. It’s classic and stylish yet with advanced sci-fi technology.
Into this world, you want a martini. BUT…that martini deserves a little dirtiness, with blue cheese stuffed olives. AND…if you’re going to do that, why not shake a little blue cheese into the liquid itself?
“This Blue Cheese Dirty Martini is a main character and once you try this, you won’t be able to go back. It is just that good. The blue cheese inside the shaker adds such an amazing touch and gives it the signature milky look.”
There’s MORE
Whew! That totally wraps up our Francis Ford Coppola series…right?
NOPE.
This is a hydra that keeps spawing head, folks. One of Coppola’s winemakers listened to the previous 2 episodes, appreciated them, and reached out to possibly come on the show in the very near future!
It’s not a done deal yet, but it’s looking likely we’ll have one more “Vinterview” - on how this winemaker came to work with Coppola at the winery and how Megalopolis impacted his life - very soon. Hopefully before the month of May is out! Stay tuned!
