Our cherry picked selection of episodes mentioned in this episode, sample them to taste the evolution to today! (And these are all authentically pretty great, frankly.)
DALLAS’ CHOICE:
Our very first audio podcast episode, that launched us as “Wine and…”, and revisited a movie that was much better than any of us remembered.
Episode 1: Wine and...Movies: Speed Racer (2008)
It’s here! Justin Decloux (Impossible Horror, Teddy Bomb), joins us for an epic chat about the 2008 feature film SPEED RACER, directed by The Wachowski Sisters.
DAVE’S CHOICE:
Waaaaaay back when we were a fledgling video YouTube show, this was the second filming we ever attempted, a blind tasting of 6 Barolos, from budget to expensive. This is raw, but plays marvelously well. We were never able to recapture this in future videos, but beginners luck made this one something I wish more people had watched (so, you know - go watch it!)
Also wanted to shout out this 2-part interview with BAD KIDS PRESS, a comic publishers that also release 2 wines based on their comics! The FRANKENROCKER COTE DU RHONE and the RED MENACE MERLOT (Vin du Pay, France)
DALLAS’ CHOICE:
Fellow Substacker
introduced us to Gotan Project’s LA REVANCHA DEL TANGO album, and we were blown away. Her Portuguese wine selection wasn’t no slouch, either!Wine and...Music: LA REVANCHA DEL TANGO by Gotan Project (2001), Part 1
Kate Reuschel of Survives on Wine joins us for our very first 2-part episode! Part 2 drops TOMORROW, so don’t worry, you won’t have to wait long!
Wine and...Music: LA REVANCHA DEL TANGO by Gotan Project (2001), Part 2
And yes, there is at least one Malbec in the mix. It’s an album based on Argentinian tango, after all. ;)
DAVE’S CHOICE:
Our first novel turned into one of the best, tightest conversations we’ve ever recorded. Hardly a wasted moment, we dig deep into the novel, the more popular film adaptation, the differences between the two, and end with some great beverage pairings. This was the model of a contained episode I wanted to beat!
DALLAS’ CHOICE:
Epic 4.5 hour Livestream with comic creators Richard Fairgray and
of . Where Dave stood at his standing desk the whole 4.5 hours. I’m not even sure we were making sense by the end of it, I think we forgot to pair the goddamned comic with goddamned wine, but it was…memorable.DAVE’S CHOICE:
Our Carly Rae Jepsen episodes! We had Screenwriter Mark Palermo on (who wrote one of my fave movies of all time, DETENTION (2011), if you’ve never seen it, you MUST. It is unlike anything you’ve ever seen, guaranteed.) It had been a bucket list item to talk CRJ’s EMOTION album with Mark on a podcast, and so we did! The poet and comic scribe Anas Abdulhak came on to talk CRJ’s DEDICATED album. Just great episodes diving deep into an arist’s evolution.
Wine and...Music: EMOTION by Carly Rae Jepsen (2015)
You never know what we’re going to cover next. We started with the 1972 experimental Kraut rock band, CAN, and now we’re diving straight into contemporary tween pop. Cuz we ain’t got boundaries, man.
DALLAS’ PICK:
Our coverage of SHIN GODZILLA and GODZILLA VS. KONG, two different cultural expressions of the same franchise, paired with different cultural expressions of the same wine! With “Anime and Wine” creator Striker Reese! (what a cool f***ing name!)
DAVE’S PICK:
Last but certainly not least, is our chat with
on the movie MOON (2009). This episode had the best detours, debates, I learned that Jessica was a filmmaker ON TOP of being a novelist and graphic novelist, and we deep dove into some excellent behind-the-scenes tidbits on the movie itself and all our wine pairings were ON POINT. We’re hoping to have Jessica back on sometime to cover the film’s sequel, MUTE!Wine and...Movies: MOON (2009) with Jessica Maison

There are so many we still haven’t listed!
’s CIVIL WARS album episodes, our BATMAN RETURNS 2-parter, our interviews with SEVERANCE writer Chris Black and screenwriter Rylend Grant on his feature film that took 16 years to make, the more I look back into this past year, the more I realize how GOOD all these episodes actually were, and are. Thanks so much for listening, reading, and subscribing here on Substack or elsewhere in the podcast-o-sphere. We LOVE doing this podcast. We’re super excited for everything coming up, and hope you stick around for what’s to come.
